With autumn here and horses being stabled again, this blog looks at dust free and virtually dust free horse beddings, ideal for those who like to keep dust levels down and horses with respiratory issues that are irritated by dust.

Wood crumble
Aquamax- highly absorbent equine bedding manufactured solely from pine whitewood fibre sourced from sustainable sources. Aquamax absorbs urine and expands to form a fluffy wood fibre some four times its own volume. It assists in eliminating ammonia fumes and dust from your stables as it’s virtually dust free, thus reducing the risk of respiratory problems, including COPD.

Shavings
Bedmax – absorbent dust extracted wood shavings.
Bedmax shavings are purpose made to provide a bedding that meets all the essential requirements for your horse's health and well-being in the stable. That's why Bedmax is first choice for so many equine professionals, vets, farriers, racing trainers, studs, major events organisers, racecourses and owners who simply want the best for their horses.

Littlemax- absorbent dust extracted fine wood shavings.
Littlemax fine shavings are a bedding option specially made for owners who want to give their horses all the essential benefits of a dust free, natural, healthy bed - but who prefer finer, lighter shavings.

Cardboard
Ecobed- a biodegradable, absorbent, dust free bedding.
EcoBed is the result of years of research to produce a bedding which is ideal for the equestrian and agricultural industries because it is easy to use, clean and odourless, cost effective, obtainable, bio-degradable, absorbent and virtually dust free as it’s dust extracted several times during processing.

Paper
Ecobed Paper- hypoallergenic dust free bedding.
Ecobed is made from over printed newspaper and has many advantages. It’s easy to use, cost effective, biodegradable, absorbent and virtually dust free as it’s dust extracted several times during manufacture.

Wood pulp
Megazorb- Biodegradable and super absorbent.
Highly absorbent horse bedding from virgin wood pulp, a by-product of the paper making industry. Biodegradable and super absorbent, this product will drastically reduce the time and cost of mucking out and the size of the muck heap. Plus it’s easy on the environment too. The wood pulp is high temperature dried to kill any mould or spores then dust extracted twice, making it the ideal choice for horses with respiratory problems.

Wood fibre
Easibed- a break through in dust free wood fibre equine bedding.
Made from clean recycled wood, easibed provides a comfortable, free-draining and economical bed for your horse to live on, and a healthy environment for you to work in. Easibed is a clean, dust free wood fibre bedding which is loved by horses and their owners alike. Made from 100 per cent recycled clean white wood, its texture and warmth provide a bed your horse won't want to leave.

Straw
Nedz Bed Pro- a super absorbent alternative to shavings.
Made from Oil Seed Rape Straw, Nedz Pro offers a super absorbent alternative to shavings and other bedding materials – whilst combining all the benefits of quick rotting, easy to muck out, cosy chopped straw! Creates a hygienic, virtually dust free, non toxic environment for your horse.

Nedz Bed Advance- Capable of absorbing five times its weight in liquid. Ideal for use with rubber matting, or on its own.
Straw is chopped and ground to produce very short, highly absorbent fibres which are sterilized using steam and treated to control moulds and spores, before being pressed in to a pellet and packaged. This bedding is virtually dust free.

Wood Pellets
Verdo Wood Pellets- highly absorbent, eco-friendly and great value.
Due to the heat treatment involved in the manufacture of pellets, Verdo horse bedding is hygienically clean, dust free, and additive and allergen free.

Why is it called ‘fast’ fibre?

Fast Fibre is very high in fibre and its unique recipe means it soaks in less than a minute!

Does it have to be soaked before feeding or can it also be fed in the dry state?

Fast Fibre must always be soaked before feeding as it contains unmolassed sugar beet.  Simply use 1 part feed to 2 parts water, wait 30-60 seconds and you will have a nice soft mash that is ready to feed. A soaked feed can be particularly beneficial for horses and ponies with dental problems and helps to increase the amount of water consumed.

What kind of horse or pony could eat Fast Fibre?

Fast Fibre is a versatile feed suitable for a range of horses and ponies including; laminitics, horses with dental problems and good doers. It is ideal for horses and ponies that suffer from laminitis because it is very low in starch and sugar. It is an ideal base feed and can be used as a hay replacer for horses and ponies that can no longer manage long-stem fibre such as hay due to its very high fibre content. It is also a great choice for good doers and for horses and ponies at rest to light work because it is a low energy feed.

Can it be fed to horses with dental issues?

Yes! It is ideal for horses and ponies that suffer from dental problems or for those with few teeth, who can no longer manage long-stem fibre, because being a soaked feed it forms a nice soft mash.

Should it be fed with a balancer?

For many horses and ponies, Fast Fibre will
provide a balance of essential vitamins and minerals without the need for supplements, when fed at an appropriate quantity for the horse’s size and workload.

We asked Emma Hurrell, BSc (Hons) at Allen and Page some questions about L Mix. Here’s what she had to say…

What kind of horse or pony could eat L Mix?

‘L’ Mix is an ideal feed for horses and ponies that suffer from laminitis due to its very low starch and sugar content. ‘L’ Mix is also suitable for horses and ponies that are good doers and for those at rest or in light work because it is a low energy feed.

L Mix contains oils - will this give my horse energy?

The non-GM soya oil ‘L’ Mix contains is a source of slow release, stamina-type energy, which is particularly beneficial for horses and ponies that become fizzy on diets that contain molasses and cereal grains such as barley.

What’s in L Mix?

‘L’ Mix is a high fibre feed that includes long fibre sources, such as chaff and alfalfa, which increases chewing time. This can benefit horses and ponies on restricted diets and those that eat their feed quickly! ‘L’ Mix is balanced with essential vitamins and minerals and also contains pre and probiotics, which provide support for the digestive system. ‘L’ Mix doesn’t contain molasses or cereal grains such as barley so is very low in starch and sugar, making it ideal for horses and ponies that suffer from or that are prone to laminitis.

Can it be fed to horses with intolerances?

'L’ Mix can be fed to horses and ponies with intolerances to molasses and cereal grains such as barley as it is free of these ingredients.

Is L Mix a complete feed or does it needs to be fed with a balancer/general purpose supplement?

'L' Mix is a balanced feed that will provide essential vitamins and minerals when fed at a quantity appropriate for the horse’s or pony’s size and workload.
